1st October 2026 : Llay (Mod+)

Today’s venue was well attended with approximately 14 of us, that formed into 2 groups, I believe.  DH/Keith was leading the Mods and I had a Mod + group of 8, which would require careful supervision, as Keith astutely pointed out. He subsequently made it clear, to a particular pairing, that I was the nominated carer for the day- Lol. He was of course relishing the exploits of his Mod group, remarking that a day out with his local care home occupants might be an easier prospect- Lol, Lol, Lol.

There were a few fast boys in attendance, but they were only interested in joining my group. Clearly my planned route to the Rackery Farm shop cafe appealed, perhaps because once finished at the cafe, it was easy for them all to divert off home in their own way, as was later proven to be a correct assumption-Lol.

I don’t believe there were any attendees doing their own thing, which was unusual. This meant both groups were of a similar size, although I didn’t have a clue where the other group was going, as I didn’t hear any conversations on that front- Lol. A Notable absentee was ‘Teflon Toby’ again, as I have not seen him for months. Steve Hu rode in from Penyffordd, a good 20 miles at least, and was going to ride straight back home but then realised my route was actually going in the rough direction of his house, namely West, so he joined us for a good few miles.

The rest of my group became; Nick, Alan (the other half of the chuckle brothers (CB1) ‘the thief’ aka Shane, who rode in with me, RR (Rapha Ray) and last but not least, Clive on his electric bike, which we later discovered he had obtained a new frame for or was it a complete replacement bike, from Specialized????? Anyway, we eventually set off right, after a few shouts to the more infirm group members - Lol.

Before we knew it, we were braking hard after a short fast down hill in to Willington. Turning left past Willington Hall, unfortunately this meant we had to tackle that awful bit of lane, but it made for a different start to the usual departures from Rose Farm. After a few miles or so we were crossing the A41 at Waverton, heading for Holt via Saighton and Aldford beyond. I then lead the group through the village, immediately after crossing Aldford brook, which reminded me of one of the biggest floods for over 30 years, apparently, when the bridge walls were almost fully underwater, let alone the bridge- True! because I had to turn around and head back to Holt, on one of the wettest rides I have ever done-Lol.

The village of Aldford was a good excuse to slow our pace in order to take in and admire those lovely houses in this part of the Duke’s extended estate. We meandered through the village admiring what I think are some of the most outstanding decorations I have ever seen on property. All the houses in that village are so well maintained- stunning. I had intended to show the group the unusual garden, full of garden gnomes (at least a couple of hundred of them-Lol) But alas, we discovered they are all gone, which begs the question of what happened?  Did they all wonder off in the night, board of their garden existence, or was there something more sinister afoot- who knows-Lol.I made a mental note to try and find out via ‘AI’, when I got back home. However, I later decided not to bother after our lunch conversation with ‘the thief’- more about that later- Lol.

Half a mile later we were negotiating our first set of road works, as we got back on to the main drag to Farndon, which is when Nick came to the front and took the wind off me, which was now full in our face.Through Holt and now sat on the wheel of CB2 (down hill, with cross tailwind) who had decided to put his usual spurt in - I suspected he was planning to leave our merry band within a mile or so, because he only ever comes to the front when we are arriving at a lunch venue (so he can be first in the queue-Lol)

Low and behold, only a mile or 2 later, CB2 shouted out “good bye”, as we were nearing Rossett, choosing to take the lane to Lavister and thus his route home to Penymynydd / Penyffordd? Some say he left us at that point fearing the climb up to the cafe, which was a bit of a brute, but I don’t think he could be that devious, could he? - Lol. After a regroup 3/4 of the way up, ‘The Straight Mile’, which gave me a chance to catch up, we trickled in to our lunch venue in one’s and two’s, all cursing the climb, but glad of the sunshine and what is becoming our favourite table, as we have never sat anywhere else- Lol.

Lunch conversation was extremely varied, once the general chit chat about CB2 whimping out was finished. However, as much as I would loved to have left the conversation there, I did inform the group that he had to get home for an appointment about some hearing aides, which also explains a lot-Lol. There were too many conversations to remember and of course that old adversary subject of ‘AI’ came up, but despite Clive’s presence, it was not him this time. It was ‘the thief’. He had been trying to find an old colleague and friend that he had lost touch with for more than 20 years or so. Having got no where through usual channels, he decided to try ‘AI’ and subsequently typed in all the information about his pal’s career and name of course.

After a few expectant moments it came back with an answer, which was a picture of a cartoon Duck can you believe. Well that had me and Chris almost wetting ourselves over that brilliant piece of deduction -Lol,Lol.

Lunch over, and various discussions on who was carrying on or diverting off, which saw us lose Clive heading for home, as we set off. I then asked ‘the thief’ to lead us through the housing estate, in order to avoid the annoying traffic light junction up ahead, which prompted Nick to praise ‘the thief’s’ knowledge of the estate. Now heading down hill fast, I decided to forgo the pleasure of climbing Griffin Lan,e after the bitching at lunch about ‘The Straight Mile’-Lol.

This happened Just as Lastminute.com came past me, having used up all of my zoom, I shouted out “left”, which surprised him somewhat. Clearly he was up for the very nasty climb only 50 feet in front of him (just realised that Google calls it Gresford Rd- when did that change?). Anyway, immediately before the bridge we swung left along Springfield Ln, an unusual little lane that runs parallel to and only a few feet from the infamously busy A483, for approximately a mile or so.  At the end we turned right up Marford hill heading for Borras and Francis Ln, just a mile or 2 further on.

It was somewhere up Marford hill when I learned why Chris was so surprised at Springfield Ln. It was a completely new lane for him and he thought he had seen them all-ha ha, I win-Lol. After a few miles, we hit the main drag past Holt and wind our way through the village stopping for the river Dee crossing of course (don’t think I have ever met the lights on green yet-Lol.) This did at least provide time for a quick discussion on who was leaving the group, which turned out to be everybody-Lol.

However, as CB1 preferred the shorter route up to Waverton, I decided not to follow ‘the thief’,‘ RR & Chris to Wetreins Ln, remembering that I was the nominated carer for the day (thanks Keith -Lol).So, I duly escorted CB1 to Bruera, where he could be trusted to find his way the last 3 miles to his car -Lol.

I got home after another 7 miles and a total of 53 for me, with an AS of 14.4 mph and a few good memories-Lol.The actual route ride back to Rose Farm was in fact 43 miles, but none of the group actually went back to RF, however, most did more miles than the 43.

Another cracking day out with some excellent company and plenty of sunshine. I had a thought, as I rode home, that considering the unusually dry spring and summer, there were many times when I planned routes based on the forecasted rain, so today made a nice change to not have to allow for that.

Till next time chaps.

19th March 2026: Llay (mod+)

This weeks’ blog is a tad different in more ways than one-Lol. For starters the meet venue was very popular, with my head count reaching 21+  At one point I thought there was going to be four groups.  I overheard DH mention Audlem Marina and the fast boys were talking about Sandbach. I also believe there were a few doing their own thing or a 4th group?

It was a glorious day and the best for months, which meant all groups got going pretty sharp, all keen as mustard.

My group became the ‘CB’s, who had ridden in from Waverton, TT1 (the thief) who rode over with me, ‘RR’ (Rapha Ray), John Mills and Toby.

Before I get started on the ride and the day’s inevitable mishaps, faux-pas and simply daft moments. I would like to introduce our latest honorary member, which as most of you already know, is a form of fond recognition for individual acts of heroism, loyalty, benevolence or simply embarrassing moments or stupidity- Lol. The Mod+ group has a hard core following, which started with the Chuckle Brothers, their moment of ‘note’ long since forgotten (something to do with Solero ice lollies-Lol) but now in need of an update. As for why they’re known as brothers- more on all of that later.

Those followers of the Mod+ ethos, intentional or not, inevitably become honorary members by earning themselves a pseudonym. These are awarded by yours truly in a similar way to that of our illustrious King when bestowing a title on his special citizens, except a Mod+ title involves no sword and is usually less gratifying or welcomed. Our democratic committee of one deliberates long and hard, with tireless dedication, in order to proudly award a personalised pseudonym -Lol. It doesn’t take long, for some, to earn an appropriate title, in some cases several, although it can be tricky to make such an award because some individuals are simply more reliable, capable, self-aware and simply down right more competent-Lol.

So, without further a doo, our latest honorary member is Toby, who, hence forth, shall be known as ‘TT2’ (Teflon Toby) as per the Mod+ ethos trope! Number 2, due to ‘the thief’ of course. Such recognition is usually all my work, but on this occasion credit goes to Steve Hu aka ‘the chatterbox’ aka, one half of the ‘chuckle brothers,’ etc etc-Lol. He commented to me, in passing, “nothing ever sticks to Toby, in the blog. He’s like Teflon.” And so it became - in the best words of Jean-Luc Piccard “make it so”- Lol,Lol.

I mean, TT2 goes about his cycling in a very unassuming way, a gent who never shoots himself in the foot, always does his turns on the front, although most of the time he is too quick-Lol. No wonder it’s taken 6 months to become an honorary member.

While I’m at it, there are a few initialisms that need an update, or have simply been superseded, as it is all too easy for some-Lol. Kev, aka ‘the very nice man’, is hardly ever seen these days, since he got married and so he becomes ‘TIM’ (the invisible man). CB1 has earned a more appropriate initialism; ‘KK’ (Kit-Kat) because he is all too often at the back of the group taking a break- Lol.  With one half of the brothership left, it seems logical to consolidate his initialisms and just recently has more than earned his new honour of ‘MM’ (Moaning Mertle) Lol.

Shall we mention the ride? -Lol.

We arrived at the cafe after 20 miles, just before 12 noon and made it back to Tattenhall by 2pm, where we all split for home -job done -Lol,Lol,Lol.

Apologies to John, who I only discovered had turned back at our first regroup in Oscroft. I didn’t know he was finding the pace tricky. I’m used to his 'fast boy' days.

Oh yes, lunch was very enjoyable and everybody seemed very pleased with their orders, after grabbing the large table, which no doubt contributed to the myriad of amusing conversation and cross banter. One memorable subject was from TT2, who tried to educate ‘TT1 & MM on the nastier aspects of fish fungus, whilst ‘RR’ (or was it ‘MM’?) were trying to outbid each other on the different types and size of motorbike they had each owned in a previous life-Lol. How ironic that ‘MM’ has recently downgraded to a Vespa scooter, albeit a nice one- Lol.

TT1 brought us all back to a more sober Earth, when enlightening us all about the Anthrax outbreak in the  fields adjacent to the cafe. Thankfully, this was a lot of years back apparently and now there is a housing estate there.

As for the brotherly aspect of the now de-funcked ‘CB’s’ initialism. Light was thrown on the subject when ‘MM’ (CB2 of old remember-Lol), produced a photograph from his phone of him and ‘KK’ on mopeds in their teenage years, which is a hint as to why they have been known as brothers. They both went to school together, bless-em.

So, there we have it. What a cracking day in gorgeous sunshine, with great company and more than the usual hilarious moments. TT1 was in particular form on the day.  I loved his story about a younger him and his drunken mates nicking Xmas gnomes. However, the police caught them quickly because they forgot to take the batteries out and were flashing brighter than the police car -Lol,Lol.

Till next time ladies- Haseeb Sadeek (‘take care’ in Welsh-Lol,Lol)

PS, I’m not sure about you guys, but I’m doubtful even I will keep up with this diatribe- Lol.

My stinking cold has clearly affected my artistic writing bent -Lol.

20th November 2025 : Llay (Mod+)

What a beautiful day Thursday turned out to be – wall-to-wall sunshine and blue sky – the temperature was 3C with a keen northernly wind taking it down to 1C (according to the Met Office). You could still feel a little warmth in the winter sun especially on the black bib-tights.

There were a fair few of us at Meadow Lea cafe with the big surprise of Dave H walking in unaided having been chauffeured there by Steve T. Great to see Dave recovering well.

I’d advertised a 48 mile circular ride going to Rackery Farm cafe in Llay via all points to Wrexham and Holt. The peloton consisted of Steve Hu, Alan, Chris, Shane, Ray S and myself. Ivan and Nick were about but they must of ridden somewhere else today.

We set off via Christleton to Waverton thence to Huxley and Beeston Castle. Steve had reminded me at the start about the potential threat of icy lanes today yet there was only a couple of times we had to be careful though. As the sun was shining very low in the sky, it was often difficult to see the lane surface due to the dark shadows and the sun in your eyes. However there were no mishaps as we ride around Bickerton’s Larkton Hill along Goldford Lane. Chris hadn’t ridden this delightful lane before and very much enjoyed it apparently.

Outside Peckforton Castle

We rush downhill towards Duckington and out via Tilston and Wetreins Lane to the edge of Holt. A dash along the main road allows us to double back through Holt and onto the very rough Borras Road. Entering the back of Gresford via Vicarage Lane, we cross the Wrexham road passing Gresford Church - one of the Severn Wonders of Wales notably for its peal of bells. There now is a vicious downhill section into the Alyn Valley and over the A483. It was here a long time ago that Ivan slid off onto the tarmac and needed hospitalisation.

It was now not far to Rackery Farm cafe with just a reciprocal hill to climb out of the Alyn valley and a new housing estate to thread through. The cafe was new to most of us although Chris and I had been before. We were assured on a phone call to them earlier that, although they don’t take bookings, there would be space for us six. Unfortunately the message hadn’t got through to the cafe! However within a few minutes, a corner table for six was magicked up and we set about ordering the fare. The food was very good indeed and reasonably priced and, after 31 very cold miles, very much needed.

Time to go as the sun is dropping down and the temperature is also dropping as we head for Kinnerton the eponymously named Dark Lane. Here Alan and Steve split for home as we four speed down Sandy Lane towards Bretton. We cross the river at Higher Ferry and head via Blacon to the Greenway access where Ray and Shane head back towrds Mickle Trafford, and Chris and I head for home as well in the opposite direction.

It was 48 miles around for Shane as he went to collect his car from Meadow Lea with around 50+ for the rest of us. A great day’s cycling in brilliant weather conditions for the time of year and great company as well.
